Men In Sheds Bedford shared a stall with Kempston Labour Party and distributed leaflets, business cards, and provided information to the public<\/p>\n

Men In Sheds Bedford Open Day Saturday 22nd June 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

An Outstandingly Successful Open Day<\/p>\n

The Men In Sheds Bedford Open Day on the 22nd June 2019 was an outstanding success, with several hundred people attending. Our event was supported by Mohammad Yasin MP and Alistair Burt MP. The Mayor of Bedford and the Mayor of Kempston were also in attendance, along with over a dozen local councillors.<\/p>\n

The chairman, Bob Wickens, said that, \u201cWe hope that more men realise we are here, and how we can make a difference to their lives. Just come and join us.\u201d<\/p>\n

On display were examples of what the Men In Shed get up to when they are not too busy talking and drinking tea. Woodwork, carving, engraving, computers and electronics, model railways, weaving, woodturning, fine art painting, calligraphy and metal casting. Throughout the day there were also ongoing demonstrations, and the food from the BBQ went down well.<\/p>\n

The charity would like to thank everyone who gave up their time and made an effort to visit us. Also a big thank you to E-spired Centre of Excellence, who very kindly allowed us to use their hall and grounds for the event.<\/p>\n

In addition, there were displays of Art from Mrs Terri Conway, Mrs Buckles, cardmaking by Mrs Sarah Redding. Also train displays from U3A, and Ms Eleanor Cooke was raising funds to support her trip with the Girlguiding UK to Mexico.<\/p>\n

Harpur Trust, Have a Go Day Sunday 19th May 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

The charity had a successful day at the Harpur Trust event. Well done to all who put time and effort into attending this event. Once again we were able to inform a lot of people about who and what we are about, and hopefully recruit a few new members.<\/p>\n

First outing for our new Men In Sheds Bedford Tee-shirts. Since they were not red, fortunately we didn’t loose anyone.<\/p>\n

Atlas Converting Tuesday 19th March 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

On the 19 March a group from Men in Sheds Bedford were given \u00a0guided tour round the offices and production facilities of Atlas Converting on Wolseley Road in Kempston.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Shed members have various backgrounds, from Civil Servants to rear gunners on milk floats. They were highly impressed by the quality and quantity of the Atlas machines which are used for unwinding, slitting and rewinding large rolls of paper and film, mainly for the food and packaging industries.<\/div>\n
They were shown around by Stewart Gedrim who is Operations Manager and who explained how Atlas are one of the top 2 manufacturers of this type of machinery in the world.<\/div>\n
Their customers are all over the world and Atlas engineers can be found installing their equipment on all 5 continents.<\/div>\n
The company M.D. Alan Johnson, who is himself an experienced Northern Engineer, talked about the years of service which many of their staff have, alongside the present day apprenticeships which Atlas offer, covering a wide range of skills from project engineering to software design.<\/div>\n
Many people in this region are unaware of the specialist nature of this mature company, but the Shedders have now seen what Atlas can do and will certainly spread the word<\/div>\n

Saturday 1st September 2018 Men In Sheds at the Willington Fate<\/strong><\/p>\n

Men In Sheds Bedford were at the Willington fate. It was a lovely day with great weather, and superb bands. We sold a lot of items and raised a lot of money for the charity.<\/p>\n

Sunday 17th June 2018 Men In Sheds at the EIDS Festival<\/strong><\/p>\n

Men In Sheds Bedford were invited to host a stall at the EIDS Festival in Adderson Park on Sunday 17th June. This was the first time we had taken part at this festival; and we found it very interesting talking to the many people who visited our stall.<\/p>\n

On arrival our pitch was set up so that we only had to display our information, pictures and items. People were quite taken with the display of wooden bowls and other objects made by our members. A\u00a0number of items were sold (which raised funds for the charity and encourages members to take pride in their skills, and the items they have made). Also, we have to congratulated the organizers for the excellent way the event was run.<\/p>\n

Many members of the public stopped by for a chat, along with the mayor David Hodgson, local councillors, and leaders in the local community. We were able to tell them all about the Men In Shed Organization, and specifically our local charity Men In Sheds Bedford.<\/p>\n

Our attendance was primarily for spreading awareness in the community of our charity, and what we specifically offer. We found that we had to explain more in depth about the whole movement of Men In Shed, which was very interesting to a lot of people. Men In Sheds is an organisation primarily for older people that find themselves becoming isolated, spending more time in front of a television set, with the potential of withdrawing into loneliness, and loosing their self confidence.<\/p>\n

Our message of the day was to offer a chance for people to come and visit our “shed”, have a cup or tea or coffee, hear the worse jokes around, and even learn a new skill or two. We explained that it is not necessary to have practical, or woodworking skills, as we can guide you through a project that you might care to do.<\/p>\n

Thursday 17th May 2018 Cambridge Computer Museum<\/strong><\/p>\n

Men In Sheds Bedford undertook a trip to the Cambridge Computer Museum (aka\u2018The Centre for Computing History\u2019) on Thursday 17th<\/sup> May?<\/p>\n

It is much more than a museum. It hosts hands-on exhibitions, educational workshops and a wide range of activities and events.\u00a0 Most importantly, it makes the history of computing\u00a0relevant and fun for all ages. There are loads of machines all working which people can have a go on (even play games).<\/p>\n

Bob arranged a visit to Foxton Canal Locks in Leicestershire, as these are being re-built at the present time; along with a call at the Foxton Locks Inn for a pie and a pint.<\/p>\n
